The PolyGEMs are manufactured by an over 25 year old US company called SoloHill Engineering Inc and are non-magnetic polystyrene microcarriers with various surface charges to promote the attachment and growth of many cell types.  The PolyGEMs come with animal derived substances or free from animal derived substances and so are FDA approved each with its own Drug Master File (DMF).   

The PolyGEMs offer the same advantages that normal microcarriers offer such as a significant cost reduction, lower labour requirements, reduced footprint for number of cells generated, scalability for large cell culture, more precise control of cell growth and reduction of contamination problems.  However with the PolyGEMs being FDA approved it can be used in areas such as:
