SmartSlide FAQ's
1. What is the SmartSlide system used for?
The SmartSlide system is designed to provide physiological conditions for biological material on the microscope to facilitate long-term live cell imaging.
2. How does the SmartSlide system work?
The SmartSlide system consists of SmartSlide, which is a disposable multi-well plate that is connected to the SmartSlide controller unit. Biological tissue/cells are grown directly on the SmartSlides and the controller unit provides the right temperature, gas and/or nutrient conditions to the SmartSlide. This arrangement eliminates the need for an incubator.
3. Can I use other off- the shelf plates with the SmartSlide controller unit?
No. SmartSlides have to be used with the SmartSlide controller unit and vice-a-versa.
4. For how long can I keep cells alive on the SmartSlide?
With constant change of media cells can be kept alive on the SmartSlide system for more than a month.
5. Can SmartSlides be used with all microscopes?
SmartSlides are designed for use with inverted microscopes. Depth of SmartSlides is 30mm.
6. Can I use SmartSlides for Confocal microscopy?
Yes.
7. Can I do fluoresce on SmartSlides?
Yes, SmartSlide glass is optically clear. TUFR and CID can be done too.
8. Do I need to modify my microscope to use the SmartSlide?
No you do not need to modify your microscope to use the SmartSlides. You however do need to incorporate a stage insert that will hold the SmartSlide. Footprints of SmartSlides are designed according to SBS (Society for bimolecular sciences) standards and are compatible with stage inserts that hold multi-well plates.
9. What is the maximum magnification I can use with the SmartSlide system?
SmartSlides are made up of 170µm thin glass; Data has been generated with up to 150X magnification.
10. Can I incubate SmartSlides in the Incubator prior to imaging?
Yes, SmartSlides can be treated as any other multi-well plate to grow cells/ tissue in the incubator.
11. Can I coat the SmartSlides?
Yes the glass on SmartSlides are made up of borofloat (German glass) and have been successfully treated with lamanin, matrigel, poly-L-Ornithine
12. How does the SmartSlide system control concentration of gas in the wells of the SmartSlide?
A pre-mixed gas tank of user-defined gas concentrations is connected to the SmartSlide controller unit. Amount of gas in the wells is controlled by a rotometer on the controller unit.
